The Plazaola 16K race invites runners to explore the scenic and historic route that connects Lekunberri and Leitza, two picturesque Basque villages nestled among lush forests and rolling hills. This unique 16-kilometer course follows the old Plazaola railway line, weaving through dense woodland, past charming tunnels, and across breathtaking landscapes.
The race begins at the former train station in Lekunberri, where participants will embark on a journey that takes them back in time as they run alongside remnants of an era long gone. The trail winds its way through pristine natural settings before leading runners to historic Leitza, where another leg awaits. After crossing this significant marker, competitors face the final stretch towards the finish line located right in the heart of the village square.
This year’s race on September 13th coincides with the Día del Talo celebration in Leitza, allowing participants not only to enjoy a challenging course but also to immerse themselves in local culture and traditions. The festive atmosphere will be complemented by a bustling market featuring regional products and culinary delights.
To enhance accessibility for all runners, an optional bus ticket can be reserved at the time of registration for just 5 euros. This service transports participants from Leitza to Lekunberri on race day. Early sign-ups before August 23rd also ensure that runners receive their correct size t-shirts and avoid disappointment.
Registration closes with a strict deadline, after which no refunds are given. However, those who miss the initial cut-off can still join via a waiting list in case of cancellations. Runners are encouraged to take advantage of early registration opportunities for maximum benefits.
