2026 Dorset Hillfort Ultra

Experience the rugged beauty of Dorset’s ancient landscape as you traverse its historic hillforts on this 38-mile running challenge. This course is not for the faint-hearted, with nearly 1,300 meters of ascent, but it offers breathtaking scenery and an abundance of support along the way.
The race begins in Maiden Newton, where runners will enjoy a gentle start before tackling their first significant climb to Eggardon Hill at around five miles. Here, water is available for those needing a quick refuel or hydration break. The route then descends through lush countryside and crosses over an old railway line near Uploders (10 miles), offering scenic views of Lyme Bay.
From there, the terrain becomes more challenging with several undulations before reaching Abbotsbury Castle at 17.5 miles. This landmark offers spectacular vistas across Portland Bill and St Catherine’s chapel, making it a highlight for runners looking to soak in Dorset's natural beauty. The path then continues along a ridge that follows part of the South West Coast Path, providing panoramic sea views.
At Hardy Monument (22 miles), you'll find a drinks station rather than a full cake stop, allowing you to refuel before descending towards Maiden Castle for another refreshment point at 28 miles. The final stretch includes several small hills and descents as runners make their way through Muckleford (31.5 miles) on the way back to Maiden Newton.
The route is mostly off-road, covering around 80% of its length over old turf tracks that may be uneven or muddy in places. Runners must adhere strictly to The Countryside Code and ensure gates are closed behind them at all times.
Two intermediate timing points will check your progress at 17 miles and again at 27 miles, with cut-off times based on a 10-hour finish for the earlier start time of 7 am. A second wave starts an hour later to accommodate slower runners who prefer more daylight hours under their feet.
Equipment-wise, you'll need to carry your own water bottle or hydration pack and ensure that you have basic emergency supplies such as a charged mobile phone (with data turned off), waterproof jacket and hat, and of course, a sense of humor. Cake stops are plentiful along the route, offering not just sugary treats but also sandwiches at Maiden Castle.
Parking is available near both start and finish lines in Maiden Newton, where tea or coffee will be served alongside snacks to help runners recover post-race. Start times cater for different paces with an earlier wave starting at 7 am followed by a second one at 8 am.
Organizers emphasize that entries are transferable but not refundable; however, the event is designed to offer flexibility and support throughout its challenging course.
