2026 Emperor's Challenge

The Emperor's Challenge invites runners of all abilities to conquer Babcock Mountain, nestled within the breathtaking Tumbler Ridge UNESCO Global Geopark. Scheduled for August 1st, 2026, this half marathon spans an impressive distance of 20 kilometers with a summit at kilometer eleven, boasting an elevation gain of 2050 feet (610 meters). The race also features shorter options for young racers, including two-kilometer and four-kilometer courses that challenge their stamina amidst varying elevations.
Registration closes on July 31st, with packet pickup available at the Tumbler Ridge Community Centre from 6pm to 8:30pm or directly at the race site in the morning. The event begins early, allowing participants to absorb the serene mountain atmosphere before setting off for an unforgettable journey through rugged terrain.
The route winds upwards along a trail marked with orange stakes and Roman numeral kilometer markers, offering panoramic views of the surrounding wilderness as you ascend towards the summit's challenging elevation. Participants are encouraged to reach key water stations strategically placed throughout the course: one at 8.5 kilometers by noon (12pm) for those aiming to complete the full loop, another essential point is reached at 14.5 kilometers before 1:30 PM.
Timing and medals are managed through chip technology attached to race bibs, ensuring accurate results for all competitors who finish within five hours. Finisher's medals will be awarded upon crossing the line, with distinctions given based on completion times ranging from gold (under two hours) to bronze (three to five hours). Those unable to complete the course by this time can still enjoy a ride back down and support at designated water stations.
Participants are advised to prepare for mountain weather conditions, including cold temperatures and strong winds. The race start is located at Core Lodge, situated over 4000 feet in elevation with the summit reaching an even higher altitude of more than 6100 feet. It's crucial to dress appropriately and carry necessary supplies.
Volunteers play a vital role during this event, contributing to its success by assisting runners along the course and ensuring safety at water stations equipped with medical personnel ready for any emergencies. Spectators are reminded that food is provided exclusively for racers and volunteers; therefore, they should bring their own provisions if attending from the sidelines.
