Each fall, Western Illinois University (WIU) invites runners and community members alike to participate in the Fallen Soldiers 5K. This annual race is more than just an athletic competition; it serves as a poignant tribute to two brave alumni who made significant sacrifices for their country. The event honors Capt. Derek Dobogai and Lt. Col. Robert Baldwin, both of whom were instrumental figures at WIU before they tragically lost their lives in service. The Fallen Soldiers 5K raises funds for the scholarship fund named after these heroes, providing support to veterans and active military personnel pursuing higher education at Western Illinois University. The race itself takes place on the scenic campus grounds, offering participants a chance to run through familiar paths while reflecting on the dedication of those who have given so much. The course is designed to accommodate runners of all skill levels, with distances that are both challenging and manageable for everyone from beginners to seasoned athletes. Before the start of the race, there's an emotional ceremony dedicated to remembering Captain Dobogai and Lieutenant Colonel Baldwin. Their families, fellow veterans, and current scholarship recipients gather to celebrate their legacy and acknowledge those who continue to carry on their mission through education. This year’s event is expected to attract around 400-500 runners from the local community as well as beyond. The race day atmosphere is one of unity and respect, with a strong sense of camaraderie among participants. It's an opportunity for everyone involved to pay tribute to those who have served while also fostering support for current students. If you're unable to join in person this year but wish to contribute, donations can be made directly to the Fallen Soldiers Scholarship Fund at any time through WIU’s official channels. Your contribution helps ensure that future generations of veterans and service members receive the educational opportunities they deserve. The event promises a meaningful experience for all participants, blending athletic competition with heartfelt remembrance and community support.
