The Freedom Run, organized annually by Georgia Southern University's Army ROTC program, is more than just an athletic competition; it’s a celebration of dedication and service. This year, the run honors Master Sergeant Christopher Decker, who passed away on March 12, 2024 after sustaining injuries in a motorcycle accident. MSG Decker was deeply involved with the Eagle Battalion as its Senior Military Science Instructor since July 2020. Born in Steubenville, Ohio, MSG Decker enlisted in June 2008 and quickly rose through the ranks. His career included deployments to combat zones and Europe, where he served in various critical roles within the 75th Ranger Regiment, including Reconnaissance Platoon Sergeant. Throughout his service, MSG Decker completed an array of advanced military courses such as Advanced Leader Courses (ALC) and United States Army Ranger School. The event offers a range of activities for participants to engage with: - A 5K Run/Walk/Crawl open to all ages and skill levels. - A 5K Ruck, designed for runners aged 13 and older, who must carry their own weighted rucksacks or vests (minimum weights are 40lbs for males and 30lbs for females) throughout the race. - For those seeking a longer challenge, there's also a 10K Run. Registration is available online until April 17th at noon, after which in-person registration will take place on Friday, April 23rd from 8:30am to 6:00pm and again on the morning of the event. Participants should plan to park in Lot 42 near the Military Science (ROTC) Building. The Freedom Run is a family-oriented affair, welcoming runners of all ages. The race takes place amidst the scenic surroundings of Georgia Southern University's campus, offering participants an engaging experience that honors MSG Decker’s legacy and supports future ROTC cadets through scholarships like the one established in his memory.
