2026 Gunnison Gut Check

About the Event

On September 11, 2026, the city of Gunnison, Utah, will host the annual Gunnison Gut Check, an emotional and challenging race that honors the memory of those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. This event is more than just a run; it's a tribute to first responders, military personnel, veterans, and all heroes who have made sacrifices for our nation.
Participants will gather at Gunnison City Park from noon until 10 pm on the day before the race for packet pickup. The following morning, at precisely 6:46 am—marking the exact time when the attacks began—the Gut Check begins its grueling journey through rugged terrain and steep elevation changes. Starting and finishing lines will be set up in Gunnison City Park, offering a symbolic return to safety after enduring physical challenges.
The race route features dirt roads and mountainous trails with an impressive 1300 feet of elevation gain, testing the endurance and resilience of runners as they navigate through varied terrains that mimic real-world conditions faced by military personnel. Throughout the course, first aid stations will be strategically placed alongside water and fruit stops to ensure participants remain hydrated and energized.
For those in the Heavy Class races, canned food can be included in their rucksacks and donated at race's end to benefit the Utah Food Bank—a poignant reminder of how acts of service extend beyond personal achievements. The Gut Check offers several categories including Full-5 Person Team Light/Heavy, Half-5 Person Team Light/Heavy, Individual Light/Heavy (35LB), and a Mini Gut Check 6K for those looking for an abbreviated yet intense experience.
Proceeds from the event will support vital charities such as the Utah 1033 Foundation, Utah Valley University Veteran Success Center, Wildland Firefighters Foundation, CPL Acel Thompson Not Forgotten Fund, and Operation Enduring Warrior. These organizations work tirelessly to assist veterans, first responders, and their families who continue to face challenges long after conflicts have ended.
The Gunnison Gut Check is a testament to the unity and resilience of communities in times of adversity. It serves as an annual reminder that while we may come from different backgrounds, together we can honor those whose sacrifices ensure our freedoms and safety.
