2026 HBCU STEM Education Run - Raleigh

About the Event

On a crisp morning in Raleigh, North Carolina, the air is tinged with anticipation as runners gather for the 2026 HBCU STEM Education Run. The city's vibrant autumn palette sets the stage, with golden leaves draping the streets and casting a warm glow over the event. The sun rises slowly, painting the skyline of downtown in hues of orange and pink, signaling the start of another memorable race day.
This year marks the eighth edition of the HBCU STEM Education Run (STEMER), an annual 5K run that has become deeply rooted in community tradition. The race is a testament to the enduring commitment of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to foster education, particularly among underrepresented groups in science, technology, engineering, and math fields. Since its inception, STEMER has grown significantly from just 200 participants to over 1,500 runners this year, showcasing a robust community that values the importance of STEM education for black students.
Starting at Palmer Park, the course winds through some of Raleigh's most picturesque neighborhoods before concluding in downtown Raleigh. The terrain is characterized by hard and dry surface pathways, providing a smooth yet challenging run for participants. Along the way, runners will pass by lush green parks and vibrant community centers that serve as reminders of the area’s rich cultural heritage.
At 8:00 AM sharp, thousands converge at Palmer Dr., where they are greeted with enthusiastic energy from volunteers and fellow competitors. The race features two main checkpoints; a start/finish line in Palmer Park, and several strategically placed aid stations along the route that offer water and snacks to keep runners energized throughout their journey. For those seeking an extra challenge, special features like scenic viewpoints and interactive zones are integrated into the course.
Weather wise, September in Raleigh typically brings temperatures around 22°C with a slight drop down to 17-27°C during race day. Runners should prepare for comfortable conditions with moderate UV exposure and steady winds that may pose some minor challenges but won’t deter determined participants. Participants are encouraged to hydrate well before the event, dress appropriately in moisture-wicking clothing, and bring sunscreen.

About Raleigh

Learn more about the host city, Raleigh.

Scenic view of

The capital of North Carolina and the largest city of the Research Triangle, Raleigh is the primary political and economic driver of the metro area. Indeed, business and politics are the main draws to Raleigh, which lacks the more trendy feel or active arts scene of Durham or Chapel Hill to the west. However, a concerted effort to expand the residential base and move events downtown has led to significantly expanded retail and restaurant options in the downtown core. Also, visitors will find many of the state's cultural institutions here, namely a major performing arts center downtown and three state museums, and a college town atmosphere in the neighborhood around the campus of North Carolina State University, the state's largest university.
