2026 Lake Nighthorse Triathlon - Sprint and Olympic

About the Event

Race day in Durango brings a perfect blend of natural beauty and community spirit. The crisp air at Lake Nighthorse sets the tone for an unforgettable event. As runners gather on the shores of this stunning lake, they are greeted by serene skies and mild temperatures typical of early autumn. The landscape is alive with hues of fall, providing a backdrop that makes every step count.
This triathlon has been running strong since its inception in 2016, becoming an integral part of Durango's calendar. Over the years, it has attracted participants from all over Colorado and beyond, making it not just a race but also a celebration of endurance and community spirit. With thousands of athletes crossing the line each year, this event stands as a testament to the resilience and passion that defines both the sport and its dedicated fans.
The course is designed with the rugged terrain and breathtaking views of Lake Nighthorse in mind. The 51.5K Olympic distance includes an invigorating swim in the lake itself followed by challenging climbs on the bike section, which winds through forested paths offering a mix of flat sections and ascents. The run course, covering mostly natural dirt/gravel surface with spectacular views, is both varied and rewarding.
The start/finish area at Lake Nighthorse provides easy access to the water for swimmers and a convenient transition zone before cyclists head out on their challenging route. Runners will find aid stations strategically placed along the way, offering water and electrolyte replacement options. The weather in Durango during September is typically mild with temperatures ranging from 8.4C to 23.9C, and moderate winds making for a comfortable race environment.
