2026 WCYCC Emancipation Celebration 5K Run/Walk

About the Event

The 2026 WCYCC Emancipation Celebration 5K Run/Walk returns to Paducah, Kentucky on August 8th, a day steeped in history and community spirit. This annual event commemorates the 163rd anniversary of when word of President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation reached enslaved people in Kentucky and Tennessee. The race route winds through Robert Coleman Park at Walter Jetton Boulevard, right in the heart of Paducah's Southside neighborhood.
On race day, participants will experience a vibrant atmosphere with an air that feels both reflective and celebratory. August mornings can be cool but soon warm up as the sun climbs higher into Kentucky’s clear skies. The park is lush with greenery and shaded paths where runners can feel the history of their surroundings while enjoying fresh morning light filtering through oak trees. Community members gather early, setting a tone of anticipation and camaraderie that only grows throughout the day.
This race has been an integral part of Paducah’s Emancipation Week celebrations for years, drawing hundreds of participants each year who come to honor this pivotal moment in American history while also promoting health and wellness within their community. The event is organized by W.C. Young Community Center with a focus on education about the significance of emancipation, fostering understanding across generations.
The 2026 WCYCC Emancipation Celebration offers two distance options: an on-site 5K run/walk through scenic Robert Coleman Park and a virtual option for those unable to join in person but still wish to participate. The race route is designed with safety and enjoyment in mind, featuring hard-packed trails that are dry even as August heat rises.
Starting promptly at the sound of the first horn blast from Walter Jetton Boulevard, runners will embark on their journey through meticulously maintained paths lined with trees. A course map highlights key landmarks such as the park’s central fountain and a turnaround point by the playground area before heading back towards the finish line under lush canopies that provide welcome shade during the midday heat. Aid stations are strategically placed along the route, offering water and snacks to help runners maintain their energy throughout.
Runners should expect typical August weather conditions in Paducah: temperatures ranging from 21°C at dawn to a high of around 30°C by late morning with an average humidity level that feels like mid-25°C. The UV index reaches moderate levels, so sunscreen and hats are recommended for protection against the sun’s rays.
