22nd Race into the New Year 5k & 1/4 Mile Fun Dash

Rehoboth Beach, known for its wide sandy shores and vibrant atmosphere, transforms once again with a festive spirit as the sun sets on another year. The race day is set for December 31st at approximately noon, marking the end of an old year and ushering in a new one with a community gathering that brings together runners from all walks of life. On this particular day, Rehoboth Beach is bathed under the golden glow of late afternoon sun as the temperature hovers around 5°C, creating a perfect ambiance for those looking to enjoy a brisk run while enjoying nature's beauty.
The event has deep roots in tradition and community support; it began its journey two decades ago. Since then, thousands have participated each year, raising awareness about health and fitness through running. The course for the 5k run/walk begins on the boardwalk at Rehoboth Avenue & The Boards, heading north towards Gordon's Pond within Cape Henlopen State Park. Participants will experience varied terrain—beginning with firm and slightly soft surfaces that offer a mix of comfort and challenge as they navigate around the park’s natural landscape.
The race starts from the Bandstand located on 1 Rehoboth Avenue in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. The finish line is just north of Gordon's Pond where both adults and children come together to celebrate their achievements. There are no aid stations along the course as it is designed for a short but challenging run; however, there will be water stops at strategic points during the race.
The 1/4 mile fun dash for kids begins precisely at 11:50 am from the same location. The event encourages families and friends to participate together, making this not just a competitive race but also a family-friendly celebration of the season's end.
For those who wish to join in on the excitement without physically running or walking, there is no registration required for kids under 9 years old. These young participants will run approximately 200 meters north and then return by the same route to finish their dash with cheers from the crowd at the race’s conclusion.
Weather conditions predict a mild temperature of around 5°C on the day of the event, which can feel cooler due to the wind chill factor at about -3.4°C. Participants should dress in layers for added warmth and protection against any light rain or drizzle that might be expected based on historical weather patterns.
