23rd Annual New Year's Eve Loop-the-Lake Run

As the sun sets over White Rock Lake on a crisp evening in late December, the air is filled with the promise of new beginnings. The 9.3-mile loop around the lake will see runners and walkers alike take part in what has become Dallas's longest-running New Year’s Eve tradition. This year marks our 23rd edition, an event that brings together communities to celebrate another year gone by while raising funds for Marathon Kids.
The landscape on race day is a testament to nature's beauty. The lake shimmers under the moonlight as runners take their first steps around its circumference. As they continue through the park, the soft trail offers firm footing and slight give, perfect for running or walking. The community spirit is palpable; neighbors wave from sidewalks while local businesses line the route with festive decorations. By 7 AM on New Year’s Eve morning, the energy of Dallas's residents fills the air, a celebration that transcends mere exercise.
This event has roots in the vision of Don Hunter and Beth Crider who founded the Dallas Loop the Lake Foundation back in 2004. What started as a small group gathering for a New Year’s Eve run has grown into an annual tradition that now brings together thousands of participants from diverse backgrounds, all contributing to Marathon Kids' mission. Over two decades later, this run continues to raise significant funds—over $240,000 raised so far—to support the nonprofit's efforts in promoting physical activity among youth.
