33rd YCMA Stair Climb & Urban Hike

About the Event

The 33rd YCMA Stair Climb & Urban Hike returns to Los Angeles on September 25th, an event that has become a cornerstone of the city's fitness calendar for nearly four decades. Participants gather in downtown Los Angeles, where they face one of the most challenging and rewarding climbs west of the Mississippi: scaling U.S. Bank Tower’s towering stairwell, which reaches an impressive height of 1,050 feet over 75 stories. The climb itself is a test of endurance, drawing thousands each year to push themselves up its steep steps.
On race day, Los Angeles' vibrant downtown transforms into a bustling hive of activity and camaraderie as runners and walkers converge from across the city and beyond. The crisp morning air fills with the sounds of footsteps ascending the stairs in unison, punctuated by cheers and encouragement echoing through the tower’s halls. As participants reach Maquire Gardens at street level, they are greeted by a lively atmosphere complete with food vendors, live music, activities for all ages, and even a beer garden where everyone can celebrate their accomplishment or cheer on those still climbing.
The event has grown significantly over its 33-year history, now attracting nearly 4,000 participants annually. The climb itself is steeped in tradition; it’s not just about the physical challenge but also about supporting local causes and fostering community spirit. Each year, a portion of the proceeds goes towards benefiting various charities within Los Angeles, making this more than just an athletic endeavor—it's a celebration of unity and support for those who need it most.
The course itself is straightforward yet daunting: participants must ascend 1,664 steps at U.S. Bank Tower, one of downtown’s iconic landmarks. The route includes no breaks or aid stations along the way—just the continuous climb to the top, where climbers can take in stunning views before descending via elevator back down to Maquire Gardens for post-event festivities and awards ceremonies. For those who prefer a less strenuous but equally engaging experience, an Urban Hike option is available, allowing participants to explore key cultural landmarks like MOCA, The Broad, Disney Concert Hall, and the Grand LA Hotel.
The weather in September typically offers warm yet comfortable conditions with average temperatures around 23.8°C (75°F), though humidity can reach up to 69%, which means it’s wise for climbers to stay hydrated throughout their ascent and descent. Rainfall is minimal—only about 0.9mm on race day, ensuring the hard surface of the stairwell remains dry underfoot but still challenging.

The 33rd YCMA Stair Climb & Urban Hike is more than just a climb; it's an annual pilgrimage that unites Los Angeles in a shared spirit of ambition and community, making this Labor Day weekend event something truly special for all those who participate.

Frank Lloyd Wright is said to have quipped, "Tip the world over on its side and everything loose will land in Los Angeles," a quote that has since been repeated both by those who love and hate L.A. The "City of Angels" is home to people who hail from all parts of the globe and an important center of culture, business, media, and international trade. However, it's most famous for being a major center of the world's television, motion picture, and music industry, which forms the base of the city's status and lures visitors for its show business history and celebrity culture. Visitors are also drawn to Los Angeles for its Mediterranean climate and numerous beaches, which gave birth to California's famed surf culture.
