36th Allendale Challenge

About the Event

The Allendale Challenge, now in its 36th edition and set for 2027, remains one of the most demanding yet rewarding walking and fell running events in Northumberland. Organized by the dedicated volunteers at North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team to raise crucial funds for their operations, this event attracts enthusiasts from far and wide who are drawn to its challenging terrain and captivating scenery.
Starting from Allendale Village Hall early on a crisp morning, participants embark on an anti-clockwise loop through some of the most pristine peat bogs in the North Pennines. The route features iconic landmarks such as Hard Rigg, Black Hill, Kilhope Law, Spartylea, The Drag, and Ladlewell before returning to the heart of Allendale town.
While the terrain is rugged and unforgiving, it also offers breathtaking views that make every step worthwhile. Walkers can expect a 26-mile journey filled with varied landscapes ranging from open moorland to dense heather-covered hillsides. The unpredictable weather in this region adds an element of adventure, making each challenge unique.
For the upcoming event, organizers have introduced electronic chip timing for enhanced safety and efficiency. This system ensures accurate tracking throughout the course, reducing wait times at checkpoints and providing instant finish results upon completion.
Registration opens early with check-in starting from 6:30 am for walkers and up until 9:45 am for runners. Walkers can choose their start time between 7:00 am and 8:30 am while the running contingent departs at a unified 10:00 am.
With an entry limit of 750 participants, early registration is advised to secure your spot in this unforgettable experience. The event caters specifically for those aged 18 years or older (with exceptions made for younger individuals accompanied by a responsible adult).
Entry fees cover all necessary services and amenities at the venue, including access to electronic timing systems and post-event refreshments. Additionally, participants have the option of purchasing XCover insurance, providing peace of mind in case unforeseen circumstances prevent their participation.
The Allendale Challenge promises an exhilarating blend of physical challenge, natural beauty, and community spirit – a must-attend event for any serious walker or fell runner looking to test themselves against some of Britain's most demanding terrain.

About Northumberland

Scenic view of

Northumberland is a rural county in North East England, on the England-Scotland border. It contains one of the most picturesque and untouched stretches of coastline in the United Kingdom and contains rolling hills and low mountains in the sparsely populated interior. Northumberland feels a world away from London and the south of England in terms of its ruggedness, sense of remoteness, its culture and its geography. It has a distinctly more Scottish feel to it than English and at its closest point is a mere 45 minutes from the Scottish capital.
