Race day in downtown Bethlehem is a blend of crisp morning light and the gentle hum of community energy. As runners gather at Northampton Community College’s Bethlehem Campus for the start of this five-kilometer race, they find themselves surrounded by the familiar sights and sounds of spring—a season marked by budding trees and blossoming flowers. The landscape invites both seasoned runners and casual participants to step out onto a mostly flat route that winds through local neighborhoods on paved roads, offering scenic views of the city’s historic architecture and vibrant community spirit.
The race has its roots in a tradition aimed at combatting stigma and promoting mental health awareness among veterans. Since 2014, thousands have participated, making this event not just about running but also about coming together for a common cause. With over 300 runners expected to participate this year, the event is poised to continue its legacy of raising funds and spreading awareness.
The course follows a well-marked route that begins at Northampton Community College’s Bethlehem Campus before looping through residential areas on smooth paved roads. Runners will pass by charming local businesses and historic landmarks, creating an engaging experience for all participants. The race features start/finish lines conveniently located in the same spot to minimize confusion and maximize comfort. Along the way, runners can expect a series of strategically placed aid stations offering water and electrolyte drinks.
For your safety and convenience, please arrive early on May 15th to allow time for warm-up before starting the run or walk at 8:00 AM sharp. There will be ample signage directing participants towards the start/finish area located at 3835 Green Pond Rd. Strollers and leashed pets are welcome but should maintain a distance behind the main group of runners. Walkers, both veterans and civilians alike, are encouraged to join in this non-timed walk which starts after the runners.
Weather on race day is expected to be mild with average temperatures around 16.4°C (60°F), minimums dipping to 10.7°C (51°F), and maximums reaching up to 22.0°C (72°F). A high UV index of 6 means runners should apply sunscreen, wear a hat, and sunglasses for protection against the sun’s rays. Bring a jacket or light sweater as temperatures can feel cooler early in the morning.
Participants can register online at https://runsignup.com/Race/PA/Bethlehem/CombatStigma5k with fees set at $25 per person covering 10K (6.2 miles) and 5K (3.1 miles). Register by April 29, 2027 for the best pricing.
