About the Event

In the heart of East Grand Rapids on New Year's Eve at 2:00 PM, the sun will be setting over the lakeside as participants toe the line for this historic race. The skies are expected to clear by late afternoon, offering a crisp and invigorating start under the fading winter light. Reeds Lake, with its serene beauty, provides the backdrop for a memorable 4-mile loop around the lake’s perimeter.
Since Joe O’Brien's first gathering in 1982, this run has become an integral part of the community fabric. Each year, runners and walkers come together to not just compete but also reflect on what they’ve accomplished over the past year. The race is a testament to perseverance and unity, drawing participants from all walks of life who share the common goal of ending 2025 with intention.

Race day in East Grand Rapids brings a unique blend of community energy. The air is cold but invigorating as runners and walkers lace up their shoes for the final push into the new year. The course, certified by USATF, offers a firm yet slightly soft surface that ensures a fast and accurate 4-mile loop around Reeds Lake. The route features several notable landmarks such as East Grand Rapids Middle School where the main race starts, and John Collins Park at the finish line.
The start of the Kids Race is set for 1:30 PM on the school field near East Grand Rapids Middle School. Participants in this half-mile course will receive disco-ball medals upon crossing the finish line, adding a festive touch to the day’s festivities. The main race begins shortly after and follows the same route, looping around Reeds Lake before concluding at John Collins Park.

The course is laid out with a start/finish layout that takes runners through picturesque sections of East Grand Rapids. The elevation changes are minimal but provide enough variation to keep the pace lively and engaging. Along the route, aid stations will be strategically placed at key intervals to ensure participants have access to water and energy gels.
Weather conditions in December can vary widely; temperatures typically range from -3°C to 2.7°C with an average wind speed of around 13 km/h. Runners should prepare for a cold but manageable day, as the sun will help offset some of the chill. A light jacket or vest is recommended alongside layers that can be easily removed if needed.

Registration for this event opens online at https://runsignup.com/Race/MI/GrandRapids/ResolutionRunEGR. The early bird registration fee is $30 for the bare bones package and $35 for those who want a custom die-cast medal. Kids’ race participants pay only $10.
Participants can pick up their bibs on December 30th from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Big Bob’s Pizza in downtown Grand Rapids or the morning of the event starting at midnight.
The start address is East Grand Rapids Middle School, and runners must be 18 years old to participate. First-timers are welcome; we have a relaxed atmosphere that caters to all skill levels from beginners to seasoned athletes.
