The 4th Community Matters Foundation 5K In Memory of David Ashby returns to Dewey Beach, Delaware on August 8, 2026. This race honors the memory of Dave, a beloved community member who passed away suddenly from an undiagnosed cardiac arrhythmia just before his 29th birthday. The event takes place in the heart of Dewey Beach, where the soft Atlantic breezes mix with the salty air to create a unique atmosphere on race day. Participants will run through the historic boardwalk and along the bay side promenade, passing by iconic local landmarks like the Dewey Beach Pier. This 5K is more than just a race; it's a community gathering that has been growing stronger each year since its inception four years ago. Past editions have seen over 100 participants, with many returning every year to support both the cause and the vibrant spirit of Dewey Beach. The event supports the Ten Sisters of Dewey Beach Road Race Series and raises funds for critical initiatives such as donating defibrillator machines and hands-only CPR training to local businesses. The course itself stretches through some of Dewey’s most charming streets, beginning at the Dewey Beach Pier and weaving its way along the bay side promenade. The route offers a mix of flat terrains and gentle slopes, with distance markers every 200 meters ensuring runners stay on track as they sprint towards the finish line. Notable features include the scenic views from the boardwalk and the historic charm of the Dewey Beach neighborhoods. On race day, expect typical August conditions in Delaware with temperatures ranging between a comfortable average of 24.2°C to slightly warmer highs around 28°C. The humidity levels will be moderate at 72.7%, making it important for runners to stay hydrated and prepared. Wind speeds are expected to average around 11.8 km/h, which can create some interesting conditions on the run.
