9 11 Memorial 5K

On September 5, 2026, the Valdosta Fire Department will host its sixth annual 9/11 Memorial Run to commemorate and honor those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. This year marks a significant milestone as it is the 25th anniversary of that tragic day, making this event particularly poignant.
The race offers participants an out-and-back course through Downtown Valdosta, starting at the intersection of N Valley and N Patterson Streets near Valdosta State University. The scenic route provides runners with opportunities to appreciate the city's vibrant atmosphere while paying tribute to those who have made sacrifices in service to their community.
A patriotic theme will permeate this year’s event, inviting spectators to line the course with decorated signs and costumes to show support for both participants and first responders. In recognition of the anniversary, a special commemorative hooded sweatshirt is available for purchase at $30, with shipping options also provided at an additional cost.
Participants can pick up their race packets on September 4th from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM at the City Annex or opt for Race Day Packet Pickup starting at 6:30 AM. The event has earned USATF certification, meaning runners' times may qualify them for entry into major races such as Peachtree Road Race and prestigious marathons like New York and Boston.
The morning will kick off with remarks by city and county officials followed by a ceremonial moment from the Moody Air Force Base Honor Guard before the race begins promptly at 8:00 AM. After crossing the finish line, runners can look forward to awards presentations recognizing top overall male and female winners as well as masters divisions across various age categories.
Additionally, there will be special recognitions for the oldest and youngest participants along with an award for the most patriotic participant. The day concludes with a ceremony on the front courthouse lawn at 100 E Central Ave., where attendees can join in commemorating those affected by the events of September 11th.
The event also features an Inter-Agency Competition, encouraging teams from Tifton Fire Department, Brooks Fire Department, Moody Air Force Base, National Guard, Hahira Fire Department, Valdosta Police Department, and others to compete for a trophy and prize package based on team size.
