Aldermans Ascent

Nestled among the rugged landscapes of England’s fell country, this classic route offers runners an unforgettable blend of challenge and beauty. The course begins with a visit to the iconic 'Pots and Pans' monument—a local landmark that sets the stage for what lies ahead.
As you ascend towards Shaw Rocks, marking the highest point on the trail, the terrain becomes increasingly demanding. From there, the route takes a sharp turn back down Alderman's Hill, where runners are greeted by technical descents followed by grueling ascents to the shoulder of Alderman’s Hill. The latter part of the race features a long and steep uphill climb before transitioning into a more manageable descent towards the finish line.
This 8.5-kilometer route includes over 400 meters of elevation gain, making it a true test for fell runners accustomed to navigating challenging terrain. The event is classified as an 'AS' race according to Fell Running Association (FRA) rules and will be part of the prestigious English Fell Running Championships in 2026.
Competitors are advised to carry full kit requirements based on FRA guidelines, which may vary depending on weather conditions and trail specifics. Detailed mandatory equipment lists will be announced closer to the race date.
For this year’s edition, runners should note that a portion of the route leading up to Open Moor passes through private land. Recce runs are recommended along the standard advertised path available on Cragrunner for safety reasons.
The starting line is set at Satellite Centre, located on Wellington Road in Greenfield, Oldham OL3 7AQ. Final race day details and important information will be distributed via email approximately one week before the event date to ensure all participants have ample time to prepare accordingly.
