The Annual Physical Therapy Run, Walk and Roll Event returns to Ascarate Park in El Paso, Texas on Sunday, October 25th, marking its thirty-fourth year as a beloved community tradition that celebrates health, inclusion, and giving back. This fall day brings runners of all abilities together for races ranging from the traditional five-kilometer run to wheelchair divisions and handcycle options.
Ascarate Park is nestled in El Paso's vibrant Ascarate neighborhood, offering an expansive green space with mature trees lining winding paths and a lively pavilion at its heart where racers gather before and after crossing the finish line. The crisp October air sets a tone of anticipation as participants arrive early to check-in, stretching out or warming up on the soft grass while enjoying morning coffee and conversation under umbrellas that offer shade from an otherwise mild sun.
The event has grown significantly since it began in 1993, now attracting hundreds who come not just for competition but also to support local non-profit organizations such as El Paso's United Spinal Association and the Greater El Paso Physical Therapy District (GEPD). Funds raised go directly into scholarships for physical therapy students at nearby universities along with programs that improve accessibility within the community. Each year, special awards are given out including trophies for the largest team registration and medals to top finishers in various age groups and divisions.
The race course begins and ends at The Pavilion inside Ascarate Park, featuring a mix of paved pathways and grassy sections that wind through scenic areas dotted with benches where spectators can cheer on participants. Distances include both 5K runs as well as shorter one-mile options for those looking to enjoy the atmosphere without committing to longer distances. Aid stations are strategically placed along the route providing water and snacks.
Runners should expect comfortable autumn weather, with temperatures around 21°C (70°F), minimal wind but high humidity levels of about 35%, making it essential to stay hydrated throughout your run or walk. Although unlikely due to El Paso’s typically dry climate in October, there is a small chance for light rain which would leave trails hard and dry underfoot.

The registration process opens early online with discounted fees if signed up by the deadline of October 15th at midnight Mountain Time; afterward rates increase slightly. Early packet pickup can be done on Thursday, October 24th from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm at Up and Running located in N Mesa Street Suite 205. Those who register later will need to arrive early Sunday morning between 7:00-7:45 a.m., ready with photo ID, proof of military status if applicable, and payment method. All participants are encouraged to join the costume contest which starts promptly at 7:50 am.
