Baker Trail UltraChallenge

The Baker Trail UltraChallenge returns to Vowinckel, Pennsylvania on August 29th as part of a series covering the entire Baker Trail over three years. This year’s event focuses on the Northern section of the trail and includes both individual races and relay options for teams up to five members strong. The race starts at Brookville Evangelical Methodist Church in Brookville, PA, with participants gathering early morning before starting their journey along the 50-mile course.
On race day, runners will face a mix of paved roads and unpaved paths marked by yellow blazes on trees and other landmarks throughout Vowinckel’s countryside. The trail conditions are firm but slightly soft underfoot, challenging competitors with varied terrain that requires constant attention to navigation markers. As the sun rises over Brookville in early morning hours, runners will encounter stretches of narrow road shoulders where caution is paramount.
The UltraChallenge has been an annual tradition since 2015 and draws participants from across Pennsylvania eager to tackle this demanding course. Each year, a unique piece of a three-part medal is awarded upon completion within the fourteen-hour cutoff time; completing all sections earns runners a commemorative holder for their medals. The community spirit at Brookville Evangelical Methodist Church serves as both basecamp and finish line, offering pre-race dinner options, drop-bag collection points, camping facilities, and post-race picnics.
The course follows the 134-mile Baker Trail in sections, with this year’s route covering approximately half of that distance. The terrain is diverse, ranging from dirt roads to forest paths marked by yellow blazes. Aid stations are strategically placed along the way, providing runners with essential supplies and encouraging them to stay hydrated during their long journey. Starting at 6:30 AM sharp, participants must complete their run or relay leg before the deadline of 8 p.m.
The weather in August can be warm but manageable, with trail conditions firm yet slightly soft underfoot due to recent rains or dry summer heat. UV index readings typically hover around seven on race day, indicating high sun exposure risks for all runners and requiring proper sunscreen application prior to hitting the start line at Brookville Evangelical Methodist Church.
The Baker Trail UltraChallenge offers several distance options including a 50-mile individual run for men and women as well as an 80.5-kilometer relay event divided among five team members.
Registration for the Baker Trail UltraChallenge can be completed at https://ultrasignup.com/register.aspx?did=130283 with a deadline of August 7th, 2026. The registration fees are $150.00 per individual and $250.00 per relay team for the northern section race day experience.
Participants must pick up their bibs either Friday evening between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m., or on race morning from 3:45 a.m. to 4:45 a.m. at Brookville Evangelical Methodist Church, located at 30 White Street in Brookville, Pennsylvania.
The start location is the same church where bib pickup occurs. Runners should arrive prepared with appropriate gear for varying trail conditions and be ready to adhere strictly to the fourteen-hour cutoff time enforced by race organizers.
