Beacon Hill Backyard Ultra: A Test of Endurance at Beacon Hill Country Park Dive into one of Britain's most challenging ultra-running events as the beacon glows brightly over Beacon Hill Country Park. The Beacon Hill Backyard, an officially affiliated Big’s Backyard Ultra event, invites runners to challenge their limits on a 6.71km loop that climbs 180 meters in elevation and includes varied terrain such as gravel paths, forest trails, and volcanic outcrops. The race begins at the Lower Car Park of Beacon Hill Country Park on Saturday, March 27th, 2027, with participants setting off every hour until only one runner remains standing. This format is designed to test not just speed but also patience, pacing, and mental fortitude as runners navigate through changing conditions over multiple laps. The loop itself offers a mix of technical challenges that include rocky sections and forest paths, making each lap unique yet consistent in its demands. With no set finish line, the event continues until one runner completes an hour-long circuit unchallenged by others—earning them the title and the honor to light the beacon at Beacon Hill. Runners can opt for either a full race with no time limit or join the 12-Hour Taster that follows the same rules but concludes after twelve hours. Both formats offer access to marquee bunkhouses where runners can rest, refuel, and strategize between laps. The event also provides free photography services on race day, ensuring memorable images of your journey. Participants will receive a Beacon Race Events 60L duffel bag for storing personal items during the event. Additionally, there are designated areas with seating and outdoor spaces available when weather permits. Toilets are provided at both base camp and out along the course to ensure runners remain comfortable throughout their endurance test. Entry requirements include being at least 20 years old on race day and in good health, though no previous ultra-running experience is necessary for either format. The event caps entries at 250 participants, so early registration is advised if you're ready to take on this unique challenge. Prepare yourself with essential items such as a headtorch (with spare batteries), layers for varying weather conditions, suitable footwear, reliable nutrition and hydration supplies, and warm clothing for downtime in the bunkhouses. Remember that no pacers or outside aid are allowed during laps; support is only available at designated areas between loops. Join us on March 27th to experience the thrill of this backyard ultra format under the watchful eye of Beacon Hill's iconic beacon—a true test of endurance, strategy, and grit in one of Britain’s most distinctive natural settings.
