The Beast of Big Creek returns to Hoodsport, Washington on August 1st in the heart of the Olympic Peninsula’s towering mountains. This is not just any race; it's a true skyrunning event that takes participants up and over Mt. Ellinor for an unforgettable day of mountain running.
Race morning at Big Creek Campground sees runners gathering before dawn as they prepare to tackle the steep, technical trails leading up to Mt. Ellinor’s summit. The air is crisp with mist lingering in valleys below while the sun begins its ascent from behind dense forest canopies overhead. Runners will face a challenging course that tests both endurance and mountain running skills.
Since its inception, Beast of Big Creek has grown into an internationally recognized event within the Skyrunner World Series, becoming North America’s sole stop for global skyrunning competition. Each year sees hundreds of participants join in this iconic race to climb one of Washington's most majestic peaks. The race supports local conservation efforts and promotes awareness around mountain trail maintenance.
The course itself ventures through rugged terrain with steep ascents leading up Mt. Ellinor, offering panoramic views as the elevation climbs over 5,300 feet for the longer Skyrace distance option. Aid stations are strategically placed along both routes to provide water, snacks, and medical support should runners need it. Start and finish lines coincide at Big Creek Campground where limited camping is available throughout race weekend.
Weather conditions in August typically range from mild temperatures averaging around 19.8°C with potential for overnight lows dipping into the early teens Celsius and daytime highs reaching up to mid-twenties. Expect winds at about 6.9 km/h, humidity levels near 70%, minimal chance of rain (averaging only 1.5mm), and approximately ten hours of sunshine per day.

In this edition of Beast of Big Creek, competitors can choose between the challenging Skyrace covering a distance of 22 kilometers with an elevation gain over 5,300 feet or opt for the Forest Loop which is 8km long but still includes significant climbs and descents through lush Pacific Northwest rainforest. Both routes offer unique challenges tailored to different levels of experience yet share the common goal of pushing runners both physically and mentally.
Registration opens online at https://ultrasignup.com/register.aspx?did=134623 with fees set at $120 for the Skyrace and $60 for those opting into the Forest Loop. Bib pickup will occur on-site at Big Creek Campground from 8am until noon prior to race day. Participants must bring a photo ID along with their printed registration confirmation or digital copy ready for scanning.
The start location is located precisely at Big Creek Campground situated off State Route 14 in Hoodsport, Washington. Race organizers recommend that first-time participants familiarize themselves with the course map and review weather forecasts leading up to race day. Age requirements apply: all runners must be age twelve or older on event date.
