Beast of Burden - Summer

About the Event

The Beast of Burden - Summer returns to Lockport, New York on August 15th, challenging runners with a historic course along the Erie Canal towpath. This event is open to both first-time ultra distance participants and seasoned veterans looking for a true test of endurance.
On race day morning in early August, temperatures hover around an average of 21 degrees Celsius as runners gather at Wide Water’s Marina. The atmosphere is one of anticipation and camaraderie among the diverse group of athletes preparing for their respective distances along the scenic towpath. Despite the usual humidity of about 73 percent, most participants find conditions manageable with a moderate risk of light precipitation.
Since its inception, the Beast of Burden has become an integral part of Lockport’s running community and heritage. The event typically attracts hundreds of runners each year who come to challenge themselves on this historic route. Participants not only enjoy the scenic beauty but also support local charities through their registration fees. This summer edition will celebrate another milestone in the series, offering a unique opportunity for endurance athletes.
The course starts at Wide Water’s Marina and follows a well-maintained paved trail along the Erie Canal towpath for approximately one mile before runners cross over Lockport's historic draw bridge to continue on an unpaved surface that remains hard and dry due to typical summer conditions. The route features three fully stocked aid stations, located conveniently every six miles or so throughout the course, providing ample opportunities for rest and refueling with a variety of food options including Heed, Water, Coffee, Coke, gels, grilled cheese sandwiches, chicken broth, pizza, pancakes, and donuts.
Morning temperatures in early August often range between 16.6 degrees Celsius at their lowest to a maximum of 25.6 degrees Celsius, making the average feel like around 21.1 degrees during race day. Humidity usually stays consistent with an average of about 73 percent but rarely poses significant discomfort due to the mostly dry trail conditions.
The Beast of Burden - Summer offers three challenging distances: a grueling 100-mile event, a more moderate yet still formidable 50-mile run, and a slightly shorter yet equally demanding 25-mile option. Registration for all distances is available at https://ultrasignup.com/register.aspx?did=133747 until the race date or when spots fill up.
Participants can pick up their bibs on August 14th from 6 PM to 8 PM at Lockport's Town Hall, where they will receive a detailed map of the course and important safety information. Race day starts promptly at Wide Water’s Marina in Lockport, New York. All runners must be over eighteen years old; younger athletes are not permitted due to the challenging nature of the event.
The Beast of Burden - Summer takes place on August 15th in Lockport, New York and is a testament to endurance and community spirit along one of America's most historic waterways. For those who appreciate scenic routes and rigorous testing of their limits, this race offers an unparalleled experience that celebrates both the sport and local heritage.
