Bishop High Sierra Ultramarathons

About the Event

The Bishop High Sierra Ultras return to the breathtaking foothills of the Eastern Sierra Nevada on Saturday, May 16, 2026. This high-altitude challenge offers a rugged journey through the Millpond Recreation Area, primarily traversing 4-wheel drive dirt roads with sections of technical single-track and minimal pavement. With much of the premier course sitting above 7,000 feet, participants will face a true mountain environment characterized by wide-open vistas, significant climbing, and the legendary hospitality of the Bishop community.

Race Details and Participation

Known as an ideal training ground for major mountain ultras, the Bishop Ultras provide a testing environment with a focus on runner safety and elite support.

- The Course: A route featuring high exposure, rocky sections, and massive elevation gains. The 100K and 50M distances include the famous Edison Loop, reaching a peak of 9,385 feet.
- Aid Stations: Strategically placed every 3 to 7 miles, these stations are famous for their variety of food. Each station is staffed by medical personnel and tracked by local Ham Radio operators.
- Cut-off Time: The course remains open until midnight, providing a generous window for all athletes to complete their journey.
- Elite Partnership: The 100K event is a partner with the Tor Des Géants in the Italian Alps, offering direct entry opportunities to select finishers.

Charity and Community Impact

Every step taken on these trails supports the local community, as the race operates as a benefit for vital Eastern Sierra organizations.

- Beneficiaries: All net proceeds are donated to the Eastern Sierra Youth Outdoor Program and Inyo County Search and Rescue.
- Handmade Awards: In keeping with tradition, all finishers receive a custom ceramic medallion handcrafted by local artists.
- Environment: The race is made possible through permits from the Inyo National Forest and the BLM; runners are expected to respect the delicate high-desert ecosystem.
- Animal Policy: Due to local county ordinances, dogs are strictly prohibited at the Millpond Recreation Area and the start/finish area.
