BlackCattle Ultra: A Journey Through Wales' Wild Heart Join us for the BlackCattle Ultra, an unforgettable 44 or 33-mile adventure along the breathtaking Cambrian Way. This challenging yet rewarding race takes runners through South Wales’ most scenic landscapes from either Llanthony Abbey or Abergavenny to Cardiff. The event celebrates both the natural beauty of this rugged terrain and its hardy local livestock, known as Welsh Blacks, with a course that offers stunning views, secluded woodlands, purple-heather-covered moors, and even a fairytale castle. Runners will experience some steep climbs but also enjoy quiet paths where you can immerse yourself in the wild beauty of Wales. The Cambrian Way is an established high-level walking route through Wales’ wildest areas, running from Cardiff to Conwy. Our ultra race follows this path for 44 miles (71K) or a shorter yet equally demanding 33-mile option starting at Abergavenny. Both courses are fully supported with live tracking and indoor aid stations providing warm food and additional water stops every six miles. The event is designed to cater to those who love running in solitude while being well-supported, making it an ideal choice for serious trail runners looking for a high-quality experience. Key points of interest along the route include Llanthony Abbey, Garn Wen, Twyn y Gaer, Pen-y-Fal (Sugarloaf), Blorens, Mynydd y Garn Fawr, Twr Ffoledd (Folly Tower), Tymbarlwm, and Castell Coch. Each location offers its unique charm and challenges. Registration opens early on race day at either Llanthony Priory or Abergavenny for the respective start times of 7:00 AM and 9:00 AM. The event is professionally managed with a medical team, professional timing service, tracking devices, photography coverage, and locally sourced finisher’s mementos. Awards are given to the top three male and female runners as well as first veteran categories for both genders. Female entrants benefit from support through SheRaces charter compliance. The race concludes at Cardiff Harlequins RFC in Radyr where participants can enjoy changing rooms, showers, and toilets at all indoor aid stations. This event is not just a run; it’s an adventure into the heart of Wales’ wild landscapes with a community spirit that keeps runners coming back year after year.
