Buckle up for an exhilarating journey through some of Pennsylvania’s most challenging and breathtaking terrain with the Central PA Trail Ultra, set to take place on December 16th at 7 PM EST. This event offers runners two distances: a grueling 25-mile trek and a more manageable yet equally thrilling 25K option.
The race begins and ends at the picturesque Castanea Township Fire Company picnic grounds, providing ample space for camping and parking free of charge with no reservations required. As you prepare to embark on this adventure, Friday night will be filled with camaraderie as runners gather from 4-8 PM for a pre-race party and bag pick-up.
The course itself is nothing short of legendary in the trail running community, featuring trails like Goat Path, Lightning Ridge, Gut Check, Black Diamond, Crossover, Fleming Way, Chestnut Flats, and Gorge Trail. Each segment presents unique challenges, from steep ascents to technical descents through a famous boulder field that has become synonymous with this event.
For those up for the full challenge, the 25-mile route offers an unforgettable test of endurance as you navigate diverse terrain under strict cut-off times designed to ensure your safety and that of our dedicated volunteers. These include crucial checkpoints such as Mile 6.5 (10:30 AM) at the bottom of Boulder Field, Mile 8 (11 AM for 25 milers / 1 PM for 25K runners), Mile 11 (12:30 PM), Mile 16 (3 PM), and Mile 21 (5 PM). Missing any cut-off time will result in being redirected to the shorter course or pulled from the race, emphasizing the importance of preparation.
The 25K option allows participants to experience the boulder field and Rote Overlook before turning back—a rewarding yet demanding journey with its own set of strict deadlines. Both distances require rigorous training and a deep respect for the trail’s demands.
Registration is first-come, first-served; secure your spot among the initial 600 runners or by September 1st at $80 for the 25K and $90 for the full distance. No refunds, bib transfers, deferments, selling of entries, or unauthorized participants will be accommodated.
After crossing the finish line, stay to enjoy a post-race picnic with great food and beverages—a fitting conclusion to what promises to be an unforgettable day out in nature among fellow trail enthusiasts.
