Boulder Field 100

About the Event

For runners seeking a blend of challenge and beauty, the Boulderfield Ultra Run offers an unforgettable experience nestled within Hickory Run State Park. Organized by Uberendurancesports over the past decade, this trail race promises to cater not only to seasoned ultrarunners but also to beginners looking for their first taste of longer distances.
The event features three distinct options: a grueling 100K ultra run, a manageable yet demanding 50K distance, and an inviting 18-mile option that’s perfect for hikers. The course is designed as a figure-eight loop within the park's extensive network of trails. Each lap covers approximately half of the total route before looping back to form its signature shape.
Elevation plays a significant role in this race, with roughly 4000 feet of ascent over each 50K segment. This translates into an average elevation gain of around 8000 feet for those tackling the full 100K distance. The terrain is varied and includes sections that will test even the most experienced trail runners. Highlights include a rugged mile-long stretch known as the Shades of Death Trail, which offers both technical challenges and stunning scenery, along with an exhilarating boulder field crossing.
The race organizers have set generous time limits to accommodate different paces: 16 hours for the ultra distance and 14 hours for the half-ultra. These relaxed cutoffs make it particularly hiker-friendly for those on the shorter course, allowing participants ample time to enjoy the park’s natural beauty at a leisurely pace.
Aid stations are strategically placed along the route, providing essential supplies such as water, Gatorade, and snacks every 5-10 miles. Runners are encouraged to carry their own hydration packs or bottles between these points to ensure they stay well-hydrated throughout the event.
Registration fees vary based on distance and entry date but remain competitive for ultrarunning standards. Bib pickup is available both Friday evening before race day and early Saturday morning at Sand Spring Lake in Hickory Run State Park, ensuring participants have ample time to prepare.
Awards are given out generously across all distances, with finisher medals and top three overall awards as well as age group distinctions for runners completing the 50K or longer. The event’s refund policy is straightforward but firm after a certain date, emphasizing the importance of planning ahead.
Whether you’re a seasoned ultrarunner looking to push your limits or an adventurous hiker seeking new challenges in nature, the Boulderfield Ultra Run invites all who are drawn to the allure of scenic trails and rigorous competition. Join us for what promises to be one of Pennsylvania’s most memorable trail races.
