Canyonlands Half Marathon and 5 Mile

The Canyonlands Half Marathon has been an integral part of the local running community since its inception on May 1, 1976. Initially attracting just 22 finishers, including one canine companion, it now draws thousands annually who come for a unique blend of natural beauty and challenging course conditions. The race supports both environmental conservation efforts in Moab’s national parks as well as local youth scholarships aimed at promoting outdoor education.
The Canyonlands Half Marathon takes runners along Highway 191, passing through Arches National Park with its distinctive sandstone arches and towering rock formations. The half marathon route follows a mix of paved roads and dirt trails that wind alongside the Colorado River for parts of the race, offering breathtaking views at every turn. For those opting for the shorter 5 Miler distance, the course remains within Moab’s city limits but still captures some of its more scenic highlights.
Starting near mile marker 12 on HWY191, runners can expect a flat to gently rolling terrain with firm and slightly soft trail conditions underfoot, thanks in part to the area's desert climate. Aid stations are strategically placed every few miles along both routes to ensure participants have access to water, sports drinks, and other essentials needed throughout their run.
Race day typically sees clear skies but moderate UV exposure due to Moab’s high altitude location, so sunscreen is recommended for all runners. Additionally, the possibility of a light breeze adds some variability in temperature perception during the race itself.
