The Lowland Rescue Cawston Trail Race is set to debut in 2026, offering runners an opportunity to explore the picturesque grounds of Cawston Park while supporting a vital charity. Organized by Norfolk Lowland Search and Rescue (NLSAR), this event aims to raise funds for their mission of locating missing individuals across Norfolk.
Since its formation in 1999, NLSAR has played a crucial role in search operations where neither mountain rescue teams nor coast guard services are available. The organization operates on a voluntary basis around the clock and relies entirely on donations to continue its essential work. By participating in this race or sponsoring runners, participants can contribute directly towards purchasing equipment such as canine first aid kits for their dedicated dog teams, maintaining life jackets for water rescues, and fueling incident command vehicles.
The 5-mile trail run takes place within the scenic Cawston Park estate, featuring forest paths that wind through lush greenery. While marshals will guide runners along the course, participants should come prepared to navigate varied terrain under their own steam. Parking is available on-site for a nominal fee of £2 per vehicle (cash only), and organizers encourage carpooling to minimize environmental impact.
Race day activities begin at 8:30 AM with registration open until then. Runners will gather near the start line, where marshals provide final instructions five minutes before the race kicks off at 10:00 AM sharp. Competitors should anticipate a fully chip-timed race managed by Total Race Timing. Water stations will be positioned at approximately halfway and near the finish line. Prizes await the top three male and female runners, alongside mementos for all who cross the finish line. Refreshments including tea, coffee, and cakes will also be available before and after the event, though participants are advised to bring cash as no card facilities will be provided.
To ensure a smooth running experience, headphones of any kind—traditional or bone conduction—are strictly prohibited during the race. Similarly, dogs, buggies, and wheelchairs are not allowed on this trail course due to safety considerations and the nature of its terrain.
