Chupacabra 50

About the Event

Nestled within the picturesque Copper Breaks State Park in North West Texas lies an annual trail running spectacle known as the Chupacabra 50, offering runners three challenging routes: a scenic 20K, a demanding 54K, and the ultimate endurance test of 50 miles. This event promises to immerse participants in some of the most beautiful yet rugged trails that Texas has to offer.
The race takes place on March 19th and 20th at Copper Breaks State Park (777 State Hwy Park Rd 62, Quanah, TX 79252), where runners will traverse a varied landscape of wide grasslands, rocky outcrops, sandstone trails, and single-track dirt paths. The terrain is slightly hilly with an elevation gain that reaches up to 2,500 feet for the longest distance.
Participants can expect temperatures ranging from 43°F to 72°F during this time of year, making it a perfect climate for long-distance running without extreme heat or cold. However, runners should be prepared as there will be no cups provided at aid stations; instead, they are encouraged to bring their own hydration systems.
The Chupacabra 50 is part of the prestigious Texas Legends Series, which includes five legendary races across Central Texas. By registering for a series pass, participants can save up to 20% on entry fees and enjoy exclusive perks such as race swag and collectible medals. The deadline to secure your place in this year's lineup is January 23rd, 2027.
Registration tiers include Early Bird (July 17 through December 20), Standard (December 21 through March 6), and Late Registration if spots remain available after that date. Packet pickup will be held on Friday evening from 5PM to 6PM or Saturday morning from 5AM to 7AM, coinciding with a Texas Outlaw Running Pop-Up store.
Race day starts early in the morning as runners tackle their respective distances: the 20K and 20K Ruck (with a minimum of 25 pounds) begin at 6AM while the longer courses start shortly after. The final cutoff time is set for 10PM, allowing up to sixteen hours on course.
Aid stations along the way provide essential hydration and nutrition support, ensuring runners can focus solely on their performance without worrying about logistics. Additionally, photography will capture memorable moments throughout the event.
The race experience extends beyond just running; it includes a friendly atmosphere with encouraging staff and volunteers who make each participant feel valued. Upon crossing the finish line, all competitors receive commemorative gear such as long-sleeve shirts, medals, and unique awards like the coveted 50M Silver Buckle or DFL (Dead Freakin' Last) recognition.
In case of inclement weather on race day, runners should be aware that Copper Breaks State Park may cancel the event due to safety concerns. In such an instance, a backup course in Wichita Falls will be utilized instead. Rain leading up to the weekend does not affect this decision but ensures all necessary precautions are taken for optimal conditions come race morning.
