About the Event

The Deer Dash Trail Races return to Hawarden, Iowa on June 6th, bringing together runners from across the region for a memorable day in Newton Hills Park. This year marks both the 10-year anniversary of the Trail Run Series and the 25th celebration of Newton Hills itself. The races offer distances ranging from a short but spirited three-and-a-half miles to an adventurous twelve-mile trek through some of Iowa’s most scenic terrain.

On race day, Hawarden transforms into a vibrant hub of activity as runners gather in Oak Grove Park, where they are greeted by the familiar sights and sounds of early summer. The sun rises over the rolling hills and tree-lined trails just before dawn, casting long shadows that gradually shorten throughout the morning hours. Runners will traverse paths worn smooth with years of foot traffic, each step echoing a sense of continuity as participants have done for decades in this beloved community event.
For those who’ve made it an annual tradition or newcomers eager to join the ranks, every year brings its own unique energy and spirit. Since 2016, when the Trail Run Series began officially, this race has become more than just a competition; it’s a celebration of the outdoors and the tight-knit community that Hawarden represents. This edition introduces changes based on valuable feedback from participants—such as updated age groups for awards and swag giveaways at every turn—to ensure everyone feels valued and celebrated.
The course itself winds through Newton Hills Park, featuring diverse terrain with hard-packed trails leading runners past scenic overlooks, along the banks of the Big Sioux River when water levels permit, and around lush greenery. The route offers a mix of uphill climbs that challenge endurance and flat stretches where runners can find their pace. Notable features include picturesque river views at certain points during both shorter and longer distances.
Registration for each distance—whether it’s the 3.5-mile dash or the full twelve-miler—is managed through UltraSignup, with links available on the Sioux Falls Area Running Club's official website and Facebook page. Participants have a chance to earn series points across multiple races this season by signing up early and staying consistent.
On race day, runners will assemble at the start line located on Cherry Avenue (4051 Cherry Ave) where bib pickup is also handled for those who pre-registered or opted into same-day registration options. As always, participants should be prepared for typical June weather in Hawarden: expect comfortable temperatures ranging between 16.9°C and 27.8°C with an average humidity of around 66%, making it a perfect day to explore the trails.
