Denis Rankin Round Relay 2026

The B.A.R.F. Denis Rankin Round Relay is an exhilarating challenge that invites teams of 3 to 5 runners to traverse some of Northern Ireland’s most rugged and breathtaking terrain. Named after the legendary fell runner, Denis Rankin, this relay event commemorates his pioneering spirit in mountain marathons.
Scheduled for Saturday, September 12th with start times between Friday night at 9 PM and Saturday morning at 9 AM, teams will embark on a grueling but rewarding journey around all peaks over 400 meters within the Mourne mountains. The relay route covers approximately 90 kilometers with an elevation gain of about 6500 meters – a true test for even seasoned mountain runners.
The event kicks off and concludes at Slieve Donard Car Park, known as one of Ireland's highest peaks. Teams will aim to finish within the same time window around 7 PM on Saturday evening in what is affectionately referred to as a 'mass finish.' Each team sets their own start time based on an estimated completion duration, ensuring everyone has ample daylight and darkness for navigation.
Participants must be equipped with mandatory safety gear as per FRA guidelines. GPS devices are permitted but not required for route finding, which adds another layer of challenge given the remote nature of this course. Teams will navigate independently between changeover points without marshalled assistance, making self-sufficiency a critical aspect of success.
