Immerse yourself in the enchanting beauty of Tickfaw State Park for an unforgettable running experience along the River Trail, a scenic loop that winds through diverse ecosystems and offers breathtaking views of Louisiana's natural splendor. This 5-mile trail meanders alongside the tranquil waters of the Tickfaw River, providing runners with ample opportunities to observe the park’s vibrant wildlife.
As you make your way through the lush cypress/tupelo swamp, bottomland hardwood forest, mixed pine/hardwood forest, and along the riverbank, be prepared for encounters with native creatures like snakes and alligators. The course is dotted with two aid stations: an unmanned station at the halfway point offering water, electrolytes, snacks, and ice, and a fully staffed main station at the start/finish line providing more extensive refreshments including soda, fully cooked meals, and vegan options.
After crossing the finish line, enjoy post-race sustenance such as bacon, peanut butter sandwiches, chips, cookies, quesadillas, grilled cheese sandwiches, pickles, candy, crackers, potatoes, gummies, a variety of sodas, water, ice, electrolytes, and more. Vegan runners will find plenty to satisfy their appetites too.
Participants can also take advantage of the park's diverse lodging options, from improved campsites with electrical hookups to unimproved sites for those seeking a simpler experience. The cabins are fully equipped with basic cookware, utensils, dinnerware, towels, and linens, making it easy to settle in after your run.
In addition to the race itself, Tickfaw State Park offers an array of activities including night hiking and listening to the sounds of the swamp from cozy vacation cabin porches. The Nature Center is also a must-visit for its 800-gallon aquarium filled with native fish species and informative displays on local wildlife, history, and culture.
