The Birch Ski Area Gran Fondo offers an exhilarating cycling experience through the picturesque landscapes of Manitoba, Canada. Set for Saturday, August 15, 2026, this event welcomes both seasoned cyclists and newcomers to explore the region's challenging yet scenic gravel roads. Participants can choose between a 60 km or 100 km route that follows historic rail beds, rugged quad tracks, and portions of the Great Trail. The course is marked with clear arrows for navigation; however, riders are advised to prepare themselves thoroughly due to the hilly terrain and unpaved conditions. A .GPX file will be available on Dark Red Racing’s Facebook page a week before the event, along with a printable map. The Birch Ski Area serves as both the starting point and finish line, located approximately 27 km west of Carman, MB. Detailed directions are provided to ensure easy access: from PR240 & PR245, proceed one mile west on PR245, then turn left (southbound) onto Road 40W for two miles until reaching the white shed marking Road 32N. Accommodations range from camping options at Birch Ski Area to nearby hotels. RV and tent spots are available with electrical hookups, while Stephenfield Provincial Park offers additional facilities like a beach and playground suitable for families. Post-event festivities include burgers (both meat-based and vegetarian), coleslaw, watermelon, and Roll Kuchen, ensuring everyone enjoys the celebration. Attendees should consider bringing lawn chairs to make the most of these activities. The event is designed as an exploration rather than a competitive race; thus, no overall elapsed time will be recorded or used for results. The primary goal is to appreciate the unique terrain that once formed part of a major glacial lake. Riders are encouraged to ride with their team or friends, taking advantage of short bursts of intensity followed by recovery periods. Safety and preparation are paramount. Tires at least 33mm wide are recommended due to the gravel roads’ condition. All riders must wear certified helmets throughout the event. There will be two water refill stations located around the 33 km and 60 km marks, but self-sufficiency is key for handling any issues that may arise. Support vehicles will monitor the course, ensuring no one gets left behind. Medical assistance is available at the start/finish area should it be needed in an emergency. In case of a medical situation or other emergencies, participants can contact 911; nearby hospitals include Carman and Boundary Trails between Morden and Winkler. The Birch Ski Area Gran Fondo also offers recognition for top performers through QOM (Quick Overall Male) and KOM (King of the Mountain) segments. These awards will be determined by cumulative times on specific portions of the route, with winners receiving championship belts to keep for a year. Visit https://www.bikereg.com/76792 for registration details, which close at 11:59 PM on August 13th.
