Elche Half Marathon - The Oldest of the World

Since its inception in 1964 as part of an ambitious plan to host a marathon split into two stages, the Half Marathon of Elche has evolved into a unique and historic running tradition. Although the original vision did not materialize at that time, it laid the groundwork for what would become one of the most distinctive races in the world.
In 1968, the first race took place over an unusual distance: precisely 21 kilometers and 97 meters. This rare length was officially recognized only years later but has been faithfully maintained by Elche ever since, making it the oldest half marathon still running today.
Today's event offers runners not just a chance to compete on hallowed ground but also to explore one of Spain’s most vibrant cities. With a population of around 230,000 and three UNESCO World Heritage Sites nearby, visitors can immerse themselves in rich cultural experiences before or after the race.
