Nestled in the heart of the Canadian Rockies, the Elk Valley Ultra returns for its sixth year, offering runners an unforgettable journey through some of Fernie’s most breathtaking trails. This high-altitude adventure spans 50 kilometers and features a grueling yet rewarding route that showcases the region's diverse landscapes. The race kicks off at James White Park on July 25th with participants setting out to tackle iconic climbs such as Mount Fernie, Rocky Road, and Provincial Park trails. The course weaves through lush old-growth forests before ascending up Gorby for a panoramic view of the town below. As runners progress, they'll encounter yet another challenging ascent across Mt. Fernie's dramatic front face, culminating in a steep descent to the finish line. For those seeking an additional challenge, the Headwall Hustle—a 15-kilometer race—takes place on July 26th at Fernie Alpine Resort. This shorter but no less intense route offers a tour of the ski hill, climbing through Cedar Bowl and traversing the infamous Headwall before descending into Timber Bowl for a thrilling finish. Both events are designed to provide runners with an unparalleled experience, combining epic climbs, stunning single-track trails, and jaw-dropping views. The race weekend is packed with amenities such as fully stocked aid stations, free racer photography downloads, and a post-race BBQ complete with beer. Additionally, participants will receive a high-quality shirt courtesy of Presenting sponsor Giv'er Shirtworks. With limited spots available for the 50km event—only 200 runners are permitted to join—the race weekend is expected to sell out quickly. To ensure your place in this action-packed adventure, be sure to register early and attend mandatory check-in on July 24th at Park Place Lodge from 4pm-7pm. Awards will be presented for top male, female, and non-binary finishers with custom medals by Wild Wolves adding a touch of local pride. Join the Elk Valley Ultra this summer and immerse yourself in one of Canada’s most scenic running events while contributing to the maintenance of Fernie's incredible trail network through donations from entry fees. Stay connected with Stag Leap Running Co. on their website, Facebook page, and Instagram for updates and additional challenges like the Headwall Hustle.
