About the Event

The 'Rat Race' half marathon is more than just a race; it's an experience that captures the essence of challenging terrain and breathtaking views. Spanning over 1,500 feet of elevation gain, this route winds through five counties, offering runners panoramic vistas at every turn.
Participants begin their journey in Eyam, known historically as England’s Plague Village, setting off on a course that climbs nearly 400 feet within the first two miles. After cresting these initial hills, the terrain levels out for approximately three miles, allowing runners to pass through quaint hamlets like Bretton and Abney.
The route then descends sharply over 800 feet across 4.5 miles towards Hathersage, before a grueling ascent of another 800 feet in just two miles awaits. The final leg sees runners descending the last 400 feet back into Eyam to finish where they started.
For those who prefer walking, there are limited 'Walkers only' spots available for those starting between 7 and 9 am at their own risk. All participants can purchase a commemorative T-shirt upon crossing the finish line.
The 'Rat Race' is not just about achieving personal bests but immersing yourself in an unforgettable blend of history, nature, and challenge.
