Frozen Devils Head

Frozen Devil's Head is an exhilarating winter endurance race set against the backdrop of Colorado’s stunning Rampart Range, featuring a challenging 21.6-mile out-and-back course that leads runners to the summit of Devil's Head and back down again. Participants will face significant elevation changes with approximately 2,627 feet of climbing along the way.
The race begins at the gate on Highway 67, where temperatures are expected to hover around freezing or slightly below, creating a mix of packed snow and ice conditions depending on the week's weather patterns. Runners should prepare for varying terrain ranging from dry dirt paths to icy ruts in shaded areas, all while navigating through sections that remain closed to vehicles throughout winter.
The route includes essential aid stations at key intervals: start/finish (with hot fluids and shelter), mile 5.4, turnaround point atop Devil's Head just below the lookout, and another station near mile 16.2 on the return journey. Aid is supplied by snowmobile or ATV to ensure that runners receive necessary support throughout their challenging trek.
A mandatory gear list ensures all participants are equipped for extreme winter conditions; this includes items such as traction devices which will be decided based on race week road conditions and communicated via email at least 48 hours before the event. Runners must adhere strictly to these guidelines, with checks enforced during packet pickup, start day, and turnaround.
The race starts promptly at 9:00 AM and has a strict cutoff time of 4:00 PM, including an earlier turnaround point deadline that will be announced closer to the date based on weather conditions. With only 200 spots available, this event quickly fills up for runners seeking a unique winter challenge.
Parking is limited but accessible at a public lot located just before the gate on Rampart Range Road; carpooling is highly encouraged due to space constraints near Highway 67 and its shoulder areas being off-limits.
