The Frozen Yeti kicks off the Winter Wild Thangs Trail Series in Huntsville, Alabama on December 19th, 2026. This inaugural event features a challenging course through the scenic trails of northern Alabama's mountains and bluffs. The race offers both a 5 Miler and a 10 Miler distance for runners looking to test their endurance against cold winter conditions. On the morning of December 19th, participants will gather at dawn in Huntsville’s dense trail network, where temperatures hover around freezing with clear skies and low UV exposure. The atmosphere is expected to be crisp but manageable as runners lace up their shoes for a day filled with natural beauty and physical challenge. Trail conditions are firm yet slightly soft underfoot, ideal for those prepared to tackle the varied terrain. Since its inception in 2018, the Winter Wild Thangs series has grown from a small community event into one of Huntsville’s most anticipated winter trail races. The Frozen Yeti is now the first race of three consecutive events designed specifically to cater to both novice and experienced runners looking for an exhilarating outdoor experience during the colder months. In addition to promoting fitness, these races support local charities through participant fees. The course winds its way along established trails in and around Huntsville’s rural outskirts, featuring a mix of steep climbs and gradual descents with scenic overlooks offering breathtaking views of rolling hills blanketed in winter foliage. Aid stations are strategically placed throughout the route, providing essential hydration options as well as snacks such as water, Gatorade, Coke, GU energy gels, pretzels, M&Ms, granola bars, and more. Weather forecasts predict clear skies with temperatures ranging from 25°F to 38°F (about -4°C to +3°C), making it necessary for runners to dress appropriately. The low humidity levels will make the air feel dry but comfortable as participants navigate through this challenging course that includes water crossings over small creeks and traverses near picturesque cascading waterfalls.
