Galena Sky Trail Races

The Galena Sky Trail Races are a high-energy, Nordic-themed trail event held at the Chestnut Mountain Resort in Galena, Illinois. Scheduled for Saturday, May 16, 2026, the event features a timed loop format where participants aim to conquer as many miles as possible within an 8-hour or 4-hour window. The course utilizes the technical, hilly terrain of the resort’s ski slopes, providing majestic views of the Mississippi River overlooking Iowa and Wisconsin.

The race is centered on a loop system that allows for a social, party-like atmosphere as runners return to the main lodge area consistently throughout the day.

The event encourages a "Nordic Warrior" spirit, challenging runners to tackle the same hills used for skiing during the winter months.

• - The Challenge: While the trails are runnable, the elevation changes make this a difficult course for a personal record (PR). It is designed to test endurance and mental grit.
• - The "Short Loop": At 3:30 PM, a shorter 0.6-mile loop opens to help runners maximize their mileage in the final 30 minutes of the competition. All loops must be completed before 4:00 PM to count toward the final total.
• - Costumes: There is a strong emphasis on the Viking theme. Large trophies are awarded for the "Best Warrior" costume for both male and female participants.

Ornery Mule Racing focuses on a low-pressure, high-fun environment with a significant post-race celebration.
