The Glasgow University Des Gilmore 5 Mile Road Race returns for its 63rd edition on Saturday, October 17th, 2026. This annual race honors the memory of Des Gilmore, who passed away in July 2025 but left an indelible mark on the running community through his years of dedication and service. Des joined Glasgow Uni Hares & Hounds in 1972 and served as president from 1988 until his passing. His contributions to the club were immense, including acting as assistant coach at training sessions and serving as the official timekeeper for this very race for many years. The event now bears his name in recognition of his tireless commitment. The race starts promptly at noon from Garscube Sports Complex on the outskirts of Glasgow. Participants will follow a 2-lap course around quiet, scenic roads that offer both flat stretches and some hilly sections, making it an engaging challenge for runners of all levels. The route provides a mix of terrain, ensuring a well-rounded race experience. Online entries are open until October 16th, subject to demand. While there may be the option to enter on the day at Garscube Sports Complex for £15, these spots are not guaranteed and we recommend pre-registering online to secure your place. Race Day activities begin early with registration from 10:00 am to 11:15 am at Garscube. Runners will have access to toilet facilities and changing rooms on site. After the race concludes around noon, prize-giving takes place inside the complex for Senior Male & Female and Student Male & Female categories. The event is UKA-certified with a distance of 5 miles (8.05 km) and licensed by Scottish Athletics under UK athletics rules. Results will be available on Power of Ten/runBritain shortly after the race ends, providing runners with an official record of their performance. Additionally, keep an eye out for details regarding a post-race gathering specifically for Hares & Hounds alumni and friends to celebrate the spirit of Des Gilmore's legacy together. About Glasgow
Learn more about the host city, Glasgow.
Glasgow is the largest city in Scotland on Clydeside in the Central Belt. Glasgow reinvented itself from the 1990s, one of the most successful examples in Britain, with a range of developments in industry, culture, cuisine and architecture. It's now a lively destination meriting several days to explore, and with excellent visitor amenities in all price brackets. Its deep-red sandstone buildings have been scrubbed free of grime and the city is glorious in the sunshine, but it's a year-round place with plenty to occupy the dreich days.
