The Golden Gravel Grinder returns to Virginia City, Montana on September 26th, inviting cyclists from near and far into a rugged yet rewarding journey through the scenic landscapes of Madison County. This annual event is not just about racing; it’s an exploration of some of Montana's most untouched terrain, where every mile offers new vistas and challenges.
Discovery Park in Virginia City serves as both starting point and finish line for this year’s edition. Participants begin their trek with a neutral roll out along the creek before descending into Nevada City. The course then climbs up Browns Gulch Road to Williams Creek, offering its first major challenge at 4 miles of steep ascent. Here, riders will find respite for those who chose the shorter route; however, the true test lies ahead as longer distance cyclists continue their journey through stunning Ruby Valley and beyond.
The Golden Gravel Grinder has been a cherished tradition in Virginia City since its inception, drawing participants from across Montana and neighboring states each year. With distances ranging from 13 to 85 miles, it caters to both casual riders looking for an adventure and seasoned cyclists seeking a challenge. The event raises funds for local community projects aimed at enhancing the beauty and accessibility of Madison County’s natural trails.
The course itself is as varied as the terrain through which it winds. Starting with gentle rolling hills from Discovery Park down towards Nevada City, it quickly transitions into more demanding climbs up Browns Gulch Road to Williams Creek. Further along, riders will experience a mix of smooth roads in Ruby Valley and challenging off-road sections leading up to the Robb Ledford Aid Station at nearly 8000 feet elevation. From there, cyclists are treated to sweeping views before descending back down into Virginia City.
Weather-wise, September usually brings mild temperatures with averages around 14.5°C (feels like 14.5°C), making it ideal for outdoor activities without the extremes of summer or winter. With an average wind speed of 6.8mph and humidity at 55%, conditions remain comfortable but not overly oppressive, ensuring a fair challenge regardless of distance chosen.
