Set against the backdrop of the Western Peak District, the Goyt Valley Challenge offers runners and walkers two scenic routes through some of Derbyshire's most breathtaking landscapes. Participants can choose between a full marathon distance of 26.2 miles or a half-marathon route covering 14.3 miles. The longer course winds its way over challenging terrain that includes Axe Edge, the Goyt Valley, Shining Tor, Lamaload Reservoir, Kettleshulme, Taxal Moor, and Fernilee Dam, with an impressive total ascent of 4000 feet. The shorter route also takes in some of these iconic locations but returns via Fernilee Dam to Buxton, offering a more manageable elevation gain of 2000 feet. Registration opens at the picturesque setting of Buxton Community School on College Road from 6:30 am. Entrants will be greeted by marshals who can direct them to available parking spaces if necessary. The event kicks off with staggered start times designed to accommodate all paces and abilities, ensuring a smooth flow throughout. Participants must complete their respective routes within the designated finish time of 6 pm at Buxton Community School. All entrants will be using the Fabian4 timing system; upon crossing the finish line, it's essential that wristbands are returned as per event rules. The Goyt Valley Challenge is a family-friendly affair, welcoming those under 18 with an adult companion in tow. However, participants must adhere to safety guidelines and ensure they have appropriate gear for navigating moorland terrain and potentially inclement weather conditions. This includes sturdy footwear, waterproof clothing, warm layers, essential navigation tools like maps and compasses, as well as a whistle. While the event is pet-free, runners will find refreshment stations along both routes offering sustenance to keep energy levels up throughout their journey. At the finish line, participants are treated to hearty hot meals that cater to various dietary preferences, including vegetarian options, vegan choices, and gluten-free selections. Be sure to inform organizers of any specific requirements during registration. To minimize waste, bring your own reusable mug for drinks at checkpoints; those without a personal cup will not receive refreshments but can purchase one with the Goyt Valley Challenge logo for £3. Additionally, commemorative buffs are available for sale at £9 each as mementos from this challenging yet rewarding experience. All finishers who request it will be awarded certificates to commemorate their achievement. A bag drop facility is also provided near HQ for storing personal items during the event. For more detailed information and terms of entry, visit the High Peak LDWA website (www.ldwa.org.uk/highpeak). Entries must go through SiEntries. It's worth noting that non-members of the LDWA are not covered by their insurance policy; consider joining to enjoy benefits like reduced entry fees for future events across the year. The event organizers at the High Peak group look forward to welcoming all participants and wish everyone a memorable day out in nature.
