GMS, held at MediaCityUK—a landmark venue renowned for its stunning urban waterfront setting—offers swimmers an unforgettable experience of open water swimming. This iconic location has hosted major events like the 2002 Commonwealth Games and ITU International Salford Triathlons, making it a perfect stage for competitive and recreational swimmers alike.
Participants can choose from various distances including a challenging 3-mile course, a traditional 1-mile swim (with an exclusive breaststroke-only event), as well as shorter options such as the 500m adult race and the family-friendly 250m challenge. Each distance offers unique opportunities to explore MediaCityUK’s picturesque surroundings while enjoying its rich aquatic heritage.
The day is structured with multiple waves, ensuring that swimmers of all abilities have a chance to participate in their preferred event at an optimal time slot. For instance, those aiming for the full 3-mile course and breaststroke enthusiasts will kick off at noon, followed by subsequent waves catering to different swim times and age groups throughout the afternoon.
MediaCityUK provides essential amenities such as chip timing, bespoke microfibre towels (for adults), and personalized medals for all participants. Swimmers are encouraged to bring their own bright-coloured caps to ensure visibility in the water. Ample parking is available at Quayside car park next to the venue, offering easy access.
Before each wave, there will be a briefing session where swimmers can acclimate themselves with 5 minutes of warm-up time before diving into the course. The swim courses are designed for anti-clockwise swimming and include a deep water start area equipped with safety measures.
