Greenway 5K

The Greenway 5K returns to Rapid City on June 12th, 2026, aiming to protect the floodplain that was once devastated during the 1972 floods. The event takes place in Washburn Park, a beloved community space located near downtown Rapid City, just off Washington Street and east of the historic Western Trail.
On race morning, you'll find the park bustling with activity as participants gather under clear blue skies typical for mid-June. The air will be crisp at 7am, with temperatures around 65 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Participants can expect a UV index reading of Very High, necessitating sunscreen application and plenty of water consumption.
The Greenway 5K has been running since its inception in 2018, supporting local floodplain protection efforts and raising funds for scholarships benefiting students from the affected areas. Over the years, it has grown to attract hundreds of participants each year, making it a significant event not just for runners but also for the community at large.
The race course winds through Washburn Park, offering a firm yet slightly soft surface that can be challenging on the feet. The route is 5K in length and includes several notable features such as the scenic trail around the park’s perimeter, providing opportunities to take in the natural beauty of the area while running or walking alongside family members.
The race starts at 8am sharp from Washburn Park's main entrance, located off Washington Street near the community center. Participants will navigate a slight elevation gain and descent, with no major hills along the course. There are no formal aid stations this year due to budget constraints but plenty of water points available around key landmarks like the park’s central fountain.
Weather conditions on race day can be quite sunny, with temperatures ranging from 65 degrees Fahrenheit in the morning to possibly reaching into the low 70s by noon as the sun climbs higher. The UV index at Very High levels means runners and spectators should apply sunscreen liberally and wear hats for protection against harmful rays.

Bibs are available for pickup on June 11th from 4pm to 7pm at the Rapid City Community Center located at 900 Washington Street. Bring a photo ID with you as proof of payment.
