Halloween Half & 5k

The beloved Halloween Half Scare-a-Thon and 5k Both races will be out and back from the Pioneer Road trailhead at the north end of North Douglas Hwy. It doesn’t matter how fast you are. There’s no prizes for speed, ONLY THE BEST COSTUMES! Start Time: 10:00 a.m. Location: Pioneer Road parking lot at the end of North Douglas Hwy JTRR: Yes NAO Cup Event: Yes Distance: ~ 13.1 miles or 5 kmRegistration Fee: Adults $15, Youth 18 and under $5 (JTRR members in good standing receive $5 off). Race Director: Holly HandlerRace Director contact: hollishandler@gmail.com Race Description: The race will be starting INSIDE the pioneer road parking lot at the end of North Douglas Hwy. Runners will run on the mountain side of the highway. Runners must stay on the side of the roadway inside the fog line for the entire distance. Please park on the water side to keep the shoulder clear. Walkers welcome (and invited to start early to keep our volunteers warm and happy). Prizes for best costumes. Please park on the water side There will be a food and drink table, and a porta-potty at the start/finish Both races start together at 10am from the highway. Racers will head toward False Outer Point. 5k racers will see a turnaround marked on the road and return to the start. Half marathoners will continue to Eaglecrest/Fish Creek Road, hang a right, then head up tothe one mile marker, and turn back. There’s no aid station for the 5k racers. There will be an aid station for the half marathoners at the halfway turnaround on Fish CreekRoad. Water, Gatorade, a healthy snack, and candy. SAFETY TIPS LATE OCTOBER WEATHER IN JUNEAU CAN BE FOR REAL. Weather conditions varygreatly year to year. We have had sun and pleasant temps. We have also had cold, gloppy,blowing snow. Please dress appropriately. Road conditions may be slippery. Consider traction if there’s snow or ice on the road. The race will be entirely on the shoulders of North Douglas Highway and Fish Creek Road.Be mindful of traffic. Please exercise caution if you pass people running in the same shoulder. Do your best togive each other space while staying out of traffic.
