Hell Creek Half & 50k

Experience the rugged beauty of Wilson State Park at THE HELL CREEK HALF & 50k, presented by Ultraverse Supplements. Set for Saturday, August 29th, this challenging race offers both half marathon and ultra-distance options, starting with early check-in opportunities from 6:30 PM on Friday night or pre-race morning registration between 6:30 AM to 7:45 AM.
The event takes place along the renowned Switchgrass Mountain Bike Trail in Hell Creek. This trail is known for its stunning vistas of Wilson State Park and Lake, combined with rugged yet runnable terrain that winds through open spaces rather than dense forests. The course features a mix of single-track paths and minimal pavement, making it both scenic and navigable.
For those tackling the half marathon, you'll run one loop covering approximately 13 miles, starting on a short stretch of road before transitioning to the trail system. Meanwhile, ultra-runners will embark on two loops totaling around 32 miles, including an initial 19-mile loop followed by repeating sections from the half-marathon course.
Aid stations are well-placed along the route with ample supplies for both races. There's a main station at the start/finish line and another strategically located at Hell Hill for those pushing through to cover more ground. Water, soda, UltraFuel Endurance Proxima C, and typical race-day snacks will be available.
The 50k course is part of the larger Hell Creek series in September but with slight modifications. Runners can expect an easy-to-follow layout marked comprehensively with ribbons, flags, and signs to guide them through their journey. Volunteers are stationed at key points like Hell Hill to assist runners as needed.
Participants must adhere strictly to race rules: no pacers allowed except for crew support at the start/finish area; littering or trail cutting will result in disqualification. The cutoff times are generous – 9 hours for half marathon and 9.5 hours for the ultra-distance event, ensuring that all runners have ample time to complete their chosen distance.
Upon crossing the finish line, racers will receive commemorative swag including dri-fit tank tops and custom medals or buckles depending on race completion. Additional items like a small pet-specific Hell Creek medal are available for participants who run with their furry friends.
The event also counts towards the Ultraverse Kansas Slam series, offering special recognition to those completing multiple races in the state throughout the year. This makes THE HELL CREEK HALF & 50k not only an excellent training ground but also a stepping stone toward achieving greater milestones within the ultrarunning community.
