Hellhole 5 Mile Trail Race

Derwentside A.C. is excited to invite runners to this year's Hellhole Trail Race, an exhilarating journey through scenic woodlands that have captivated participants over the past few years. Nestled along the Sustrans track, the race route stretches approximately 5 miles and winds its way through picturesque landscapes including Hellhole Wood.
The event promises a challenging yet rewarding experience with varied terrain, offering both seasoned trail runners and newcomers an unforgettable adventure in nature. Participants will start their journey at Shield Row Primary School's car park from 8:15 AM onwards. Race registration takes place in the nearby Ball Alley beer garden close to the starting line. The race itself kicks off sharply at 10:00 AM.
Race day parking is available at Shield Row Primary School, located on King Edward VIII Terrace, DH9 0HQ. To ensure a smooth start and minimize congestion, runners are encouraged to carpool or arrive early to collect their numbers. Online entries by the end of August guarantee a memento and goodie bag; however, those who register after September 1st may not receive these items.
The race is licensed under UK Athletics rules and will be sanctioned by the Trail Runners Association (TRA) with permit number t.b.a. for the upcoming year. The minimum age requirement to participate in this event is 16 years old as of October 18, 2026.
Post-race festivities include a presentation at the Ball Alley pub around 11:30 AM or shortly after the last runner finishes. This casual gathering offers an opportunity for participants and spectators alike to socialize over refreshments while enjoying the welcoming atmosphere inside the pub.
