Hook Mountain Ultra

About the Event

The Hook Mountain Ultra is an exhilarating trail running adventure that has evolved from a grassroots community initiative into a fully sanctioned USATF event. Set to take place in 2026, this race offers runners the chance to challenge themselves on rugged terrain while enjoying scenic views and a welcoming atmosphere.
Competitors can choose between two distance options: a grueling 50-mile course with approximately 9,700 feet of elevation gain or a more manageable yet still challenging 27-mile marathon route featuring around 4,900 feet of vertical ascent. Both courses traverse the breathtaking Palisades ridge line along New York's Hudson River.
The race begins at Nyack Beach State Park and features four consecutive loops for those tackling the full distance, each loop covering 11.5 miles with significant climbs and descents. Runners will encounter exposed ridges, winding singletrack trails, scenic river views, runnable gravel sections, and technical terrain that tests both endurance and skill.
Each lap starts at Nyack Beach State Park and includes a challenging climb to the summit of Hook Mountain before descending back down towards the Hudson River. Aid stations are strategically placed every 3-4 miles along the route to provide essential hydration and nutrition, with options for personal drop bags as well.
The event is designed primarily for experienced ultra runners but welcomes newcomers who wish to take on a half-distance challenge or simply enjoy an adventure close to home without breaking the bank. The race organizers emphasize safety by imposing strict cut-off times: 14 hours overall for both distances and a crucial 7-hour checkpoint at mile 27 for those attempting the full distance.
For logistical support, participants can park their vehicles near Marydell Retreat Center, just a quarter-mile from the trailhead entrance. Lodging is also available through this partnership if needed, offering cabins with private bathrooms starting at $95 per night.
The Hook Mountain Ultra promises an unforgettable experience for runners seeking to push their limits while enjoying stunning natural beauty and supportive camaraderie among fellow trail enthusiasts.
Runners interested in participating can reach out directly to the race director, Phil Germakian, via email at PGERMAKIAN@GMAIL.COM for further information or assistance.
