Ilkley Skyline

About the Event

Nestled among the rolling moors of West Yorkshire, The Ilkley Skyline offers runners an exhilarating journey through some of Britain’s most captivating upland terrain. Since its inception in 2013, this challenging fell race has become a staple event for both seasoned and aspiring trail runners.
The course begins at the historic Hermit's shelter in Burley Woodhead, marking the start of a scenic loop that stretches across no fewer than eight distinct moors: Beamsley Beacon, Round Hill, Burley Moor, Ilkley Moor, Rombalds Moor, and others. The route is predominantly off-road, weaving through fell paths and open fields with only brief sections on paved roads.
Runners will encounter a total elevation gain of 3000 feet (914 meters) over the course’s full distance of 22 miles (35 kilometers). This challenging ascent includes several significant climbs, such as the steep rise from Burley Woodhead back to the Hermit via the stepping stones along the river. The diverse landscape and varied terrain make each step an adventure.
The Ilkley Skyline is designed for those who enjoy a navigation challenge; runners must carry their own route maps or GPX files to navigate this unmarked course effectively. Two aid stations are strategically placed at Addingham (14km) and Timble (25km), providing essential support along the way. Recce runs are highly recommended, allowing participants to familiarize themselves with the terrain.
This event is a tribute to North Leeds Fell Runner Mike Ayers, who conceived this iconic route in 2013. The Ilkley Skyline not only tests physical endurance but also celebrates the beauty and tranquility of Yorkshire’s moors, making it an unforgettable experience for runners from around the world.
The current course records stand at a remarkable time: Sarah McCormack completed her run in just over two hours and 49 minutes (02:49:42), while Tom Adams set his mark with a blistering pace of under two hours and 18 minutes (02:17:11).
Whether you are drawn to the natural beauty, the challenge of navigation, or simply the thrill of conquering these Yorkshire moors, The Ilkley Skyline promises an experience that captures both heart and soul.
The event is a celebration of fell running’s rich heritage in Britain, inviting participants to immerse themselves in the wild landscapes and challenging terrain that define this beloved sport.
